I. HISTORY

Evangelization of the Diocese of Kolwezi began Kanzenze (Kolwezi 56km) in 1909. This was the work of the Fathers of the Congregation of Scheut. They were already established in the Kasai to near Mikalayi Luluabourg (present Kananga) since 1891. The Missionaries of Scheut began in 1909 to evangelize the country Kanzenze: Father CAMBIER was the first pioneer to arrive in Kanzenze. But the real founders of this mission were Fathers Vandermolen Instead, Vance and brother Hippolyte PROUD. They arrived at the Etoile du Congo (Lubumbashi) 6 March and September 1909, they reached Ruwe (Kolwezi). It was in October 1909 they finally reached Kanzenze. Fathers Scheutistes showed little enthusiasm for this mission located hundreds of miles Mikalayi. The letters P. Vandermolen at that time always express the complaints Kanzenze has a low population density, is a village far from great Mission of Scheutistes, etc..

However, these fathers are going to work for a decade and were replaced by the congregation of the Franciscans.

June 15, 1920, the Propaganda Fide (Rome) instructs the Franciscan Fathers to visit the Middle-Katanga region Lulua (which corresponds to part of the current Diocese of Kolwezi) . Indeed, Cardinal VAN ROSSUM had reported to Rome a rapid expansion of Protestantism in the region. Specifically, he wrote that: "The Protestants spread their pernicious teachings in this area. We can not observe it passively for a long time. The Belgian Cardinal received a favorable response from Rome. In June 1920 he handed the Very Reverend Father Albert Lismont, Provincial Minister of Belgium a letter in which he begged him to send many missionaries to this region. A few months later, Father Theophilus TIELEMANS another Father and sailed for the Congo. It was on 1 October 1920. They did not arrive in Katanga, and specifically Kanzenze, in April 1921 via Matadi.

other hand, having left Europe in mid-November 1920 and making their entrance through Africa South (Cape Town), the Franciscan Fathers and Sabin Valentin STAPPERS SERNEELS and the Brothers and Justin Remi BOEVER OF COSTER Katangans already trod the ground December 15, 1920. They settled in the deserted mission Kanzenze Scheutistes some time ago. Two other fathers will join the team Stappers Father: This is Father Florentine De Smedt and Ernest Van Avermaet. In 1922, the Franciscans founded the mission Sandoa. With these two mission stations, the Holy See thought it appropriate to build this country Prefecture. It was called Prefecture Apostolic of Lulua-Central Katanga, was the 18 July 1922. Father Valentin STAPPERS was appointed Prefect Apostolic.

work quickly evolved, other mission stations will emerge: KAFAKUMBA in 1925, POST-Dilolo KAPANGA in 1927 and 1929. It should be noted that Protestants were already working at Methodist Kapanga (Musumba) since 1913. The Apostolic Prefect

moved to Luabo (Kamina) which was transferred the seat of the Prefecture. The whole area of Kamina (with Bukama, Kabondo Kayeye, Kinkondja, etc.). Was, in fact Prefecture.

The Holy noticed the good evolution of this situation and to reward enthusiasm missionary, he passed the Franciscan mission of Lulua-Katanga Central status to that of Prefecture Apostolic Vicariate, February 26, 1934. STAPPERS Bishop was appointed the same day Vicar Apostolic and Father VQN AVERMAETE, Pro-Vicar and Vicar Delegate.

The first ordinations of priests will involve indigenous in 1945, when the Abbot Barthelemy MALUNG (originally from Kamina) will be ordained priest 27 July 1947 when it was the turn of the Abbot Makondo Sabin (born Kasaj) to be ordered.

In 1967, Monsignor Victor Keuppens began the steps that should lead to the splitting of the vast Diocese of Kamina in two parts: the Diocese of Kamina Kamina with its headquarters in the Diocese of Kolwezi and having its headquarters in the mining town of Kolwezi and Also includes the city ke Kolwezi territories Mutshatsha of Dilolo, Sando and Kapanga.

March 11, 1971, by the Bull "Ad perpetuam Rei Memoriam" of Pope Paul VI, the Diocese of Kolwezi is formed. March 18, 1971, the Apostolic Nuncio in Kinshasa, TORPIGLIANI Bishop announced that the Holy See erected the Diocese of Kolwezi, detached from that of Kamina.
